Keren Yarhi-Milo has had a lifelong fascination with the world of international diplomacy that translated into a prolific academic career. She sat down with CFR to talk about mentorship, what draws her to academia, and her work with Hillary Clinton.

In this conversation, IGP Carnegie Distinguished Fellow Amos Hochstein discusses the complexities of U.S. foreign policy, particularly in relation to Venezuela and Iran, and its implications for global power dynamics. 

“This isn’t the 1970s anymore,” Jason Bordoff, IGP Faculty Advisory Board member and director of the Center on Global Energy Policy at Columbia University, told me. “If the U.S. wants more oil, there is a whole menu of potential places where it can invest, starting right here at home.”

“I don’t think the adding of oil from Venezuela is a game-changer for the U.S.,” said IGP Faculty Advisory Board member Jason Bordoff, who worked as the senior director for energy and climate change on the National Security Council during the Obama administration. “But it could be a game-changer for Venezuelans.”

IGP Affiliated Faculty member Robert Y. Shapiro told Newsweek: "This is a good issue for Hochul and Mamdani since it speaks directly to the severe problem of child care affordability for families with working parents. Mamdani promised it and it is a good issue for Hochul to take up for her reelection. Since the benefit would go to workers with children needing day care, these are deserving people who are under financial pressure."

"We're going to have to see in the coming weeks and months and years whether there is, in fact, a stable transition to a democratically elected government," IGP Faculty Advisory Board member Jason Bordoff told NPR.
